29 Nov Starlink at Euroports Inland Terminals
Early July Belgium was hit by a natural disaster of a magnitude that was never seen before impacting thousands of people in Limburg and the Liege region. Besides public infrastructures, personal belongings, homes, and livings, the waterflood also destroyed the copper lines, resulting in isolating connectivity-wise several Euroports Inland Terminals from the outside world. Due to the unavailability of landlines and bad 3G/4G coverage another solution had to be found to connect the terminal of Renory so they would be able to work at the location. As in IT, it is good practice to keep an eye on the outside world and to constantly scan and evaluate whether new technologies can help our business, we were already looking to satellite solutions to provide internet connectivity to remote and isolated locations. We decided together with Euroports Inland terminals to install a Starlink satellite connection in the Terminal of Renory to back up the current 4G and mobile connection until the copper lines are restored. The installation went smoothly, and the system is up and running without any interruption providing Renory with a good and stable high bandwidth connection. Starlink is a brand new and state of the art satellite network under construction by the American aerospace company SpaceX. Helping our colleagues in Liege it struck us deeply seeing the harsh situation the people and surroundings were in. We sincerely hope that the lives of those who are affected, return to normal as soon as possible.
